mceWeather FAQ

These are the questions which have been asked several times. Perhaps your question is answered here as well:

Q #1: There is no satellite-image for my country/state/city in the plugin...
A: Just look around the internet and search for a site with satellite-images of your country. As introduced in Version 3.0, you can add any Url into the list of satellite images. Just choose "Add Url" on top of the list of satellite images in the options.

Q #2: Can the weather be shown for my city?
A: The data is provided by "The Weather Channel" (weather.com) and wetter.com. There are nearly all larger cities in the database. But we have no access to the list of cities either. Just install the plugin and try out... Note that you have to enter the name of the city as its international name: e.g. for "München" enter "Munich" (german) or for "Londre" enter "London" (french), etc.

Q #3: Version 1 of mceWeather added an item in the start menu of MCE, but in version 2, there is only a link in "More Programs"?
A: Microsoft preserves two entries only in the start menu of MCE for applications of OEM-partners. "Normal" developers should not block these two items by adding their own items into the start menu. The third application which would try to add a link to the start menu would fail.
This is what Microsoft says in their MSDN: "Only OEMs should add applications to this category.".
However, we got so many mails asking to add this entry to the start menu, that i extended the setup in Version 3.0 to let you choose if the setup should add an entry to the start menu.

Q #4: Every time i start MCE, i have to put in the city and all the settings again.
A: Please install the newest version of mceWeather. Since mceWeather 3.1, the application does not store the settings in local cookies anymore. So you can delete all your cookies an mceWeather will still remember your settings.

Q #5: When i try to search for a city, nothing happens for minutes.
A: This happens if you do not have Microsoft Windows Media Center RollUp 2 installed. Please install this update via Windows online update of your Media Center PC and try again.
